Medication non-adherence remains one of the most underestimated challenges in healthcare. Across countries and conditions, many patients struggle to follow their prescribed treatments.

The reasons are complex, and the consequences are significant:

  • avoidable complications, hospitalisations, and increased healthcare costs, and
  • reduced real-world effectiveness of care.

👩‍⚕️ Primary care teams are at the centre of the solution.

They are uniquely positioned to:

  • identify non-adherence early,
  • understand patient-specific barriers, and
  • co-create realistic and sustainable treatment plans.

Yet, clear and practical protocols are still lacking in routine primary care.

👉 To help address this gap, The International Society for Medication Adherence @ESPACOMP and The World Organization of Family Doctors @WONCA are launching a joint initiative to develop a Primary Health Care Handbook for Managing Medication Adherence: a concise, actionable resource aimed at translating evidence into practical guidance for primary care professionals worldwide.
